DD Process Questionnaire, TDVAA Advisory Committee

Oct 23rd, 2013

This news item was originally published on July 13, 2013 on our original site.

On behalf of Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (Hospitality NL), the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation (DTCR) and the Eastern Destination Management Organization (EDMO) I would like to bring an update on the status of the Destination Development (DD) plan. We are currently in the process of embarking on a Tourism Destination Visitor Appeal Appraisal (TDVAA) in the Eastern region. This plan is an intentional, collaborative and proactive process designed to identify a series of priorities and recommendations that will enhance the visitor appeal of the Eastern region and in turn, grow visitation and revenues for your service or attractions.

The TDVAA will be vital to providing us with an appraisal of our current tourism assets set against the backdrop of consumer demands and travel behaviors and our ability to compete in the global tourism marketplace. It will be implemented regionally, starting with the Eastern region and co-led by industry and government.

A series of public sessions were held May 22nd to May 24th in Ferryland, Bay Roberts, Port Rexton and Marystown. The purpose of the sessions was to learn about the DD process, ask questions and provide feedback before the initiative got underway. For those that weren’t able to attend in-person, a webinar was presented on June 7th to share the same information.

Since the public sessions, the entire Destination Development team has been working hard to incorporate the feedback and comments provided. Specifically, a questionnaire has been developed as a means to enable greater input by all Eastern region operators into the data collection phase of this initiative. This was developed in response to a suggestion brought forth at the Port Rexton public session. The questionnaire link is below. The survey is comprised of 11 questions and will take approximately 10-20 minutes. The deadline to complete the survey is August 12th. We are looking for Eastern operators to share highlights from visitor testimonials, describe projects in the pipeline, identify any challenges they foresee in improving visitor experiences and sustainability in the Eastern region, as well as share any other insights or comments. The survey was developed to make this process as collaborative, responsive and flexible as possible while still remaining focused on the outcomes of the initiative. We look forward to your comments.

Data Collection Update

The data collection stage has begun. Over the last month a tremendous amount of work has gone into developing a workbook and template which will guide the data collection team. It was determined that the data collection phase would need to be pushed out slightly and we now anticipate it finishing up in August versus our original projection of July.

The data collection team will be looking within the Eastern Region over the next six-eight weeks to find as much information as possible; this includes businesses, associations, municipal offices, chambers of commerce, and those responsible for marketing tourism at the local level. Information will be found from web-searches, the questionnaire listed above, interviews, and calling businesses, when the need arises. Any new information found will be in addition to that already housed within the Tourism Destination Management System (TDMS) which resides with the Province. All information will be organized according to five dimensions: (1) Reports, Plans and Studies (2) Visitors, (3) Product and Market, (4) Sustainability, and (5) Measures of Success.

Last Call for Advisory Committee members!

The TDVAA Advisory Committee is the voice of industry. This committee, comprised of tourism operators/owners (not-for-profit and for-profit), experience providers and destination management staff will oversee the execution of the TDVAA process. Specifically, their primary role is to validate the findings and recommendations of the appraisal. If you would like to be involved on this committee please contact me and indicate your interest in becoming involved as soon as possible. The EDMO Tourism Advisory sub-committees form the basis of the TDVAA Advisory Committee but we are still seeking individuals/champions to round out this group and want to extend an invitation to those that would like to become involved. The deadline for interested individuals to step forward is July 26th, 2013.

This is an exciting time in the tourism industry and in particular the Eastern region. Should you have any other questions at all please do not hesitate to contact me at 709-699-1602 or kathi.stacey@easternnldmo.com.
