Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL), the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation (DTCR) and the Eastern Destination Management Organization (EDMO), have been working diligently on the Destination Development (DD) process that will be taking place throughout the province over the next three years. Eastern Newfoundland is the first region to be engaged in this process, and EDMO is happy to work on behalf of the tourism stakeholders of the region to aid in this process.

The global tourism market is experiencing dramatic change and Newfoundland and Labrador requires a forward looking destination development strategy and process that is as leading edge as our approach to marketing and delivering on the brand’s promise. A DD plan will be vital to providing us with an appraisal of our current tourism assets set against the backdrop of consumer demands and travel behaviors and our ability to compete in the global tourism marketplace. The DD process will be implemented regionally, starting with the Eastern region. It is important to note that this initiative will be co-led by industry and government.

A full summary of the process can be downloaded by clicking here.

From May 22-24th we (HNL, DTCR, EDMO) hosted four public sessions in the areas of Ferryland, Bay Roberts, Port Rexton and Marystown to brief stakeholders on the role of the project, the DD process and its importance to long-term sustainable tourism planning.

The presentation for these sessions can be downloaded by clicking here.

BRAIN TRUST Marketing & Communications (Richard Innes, lead) in partnership with the Tourism Café (Dr. Nancy Arsenault) have been engaged as the facilitating consultants for the DD project. Both have extensive experience in tourism destination planning and experiential tourism development.

For inquires or questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Executive Director Kathi Stacey at We look forward to working with you on this very vital project.
